This book is fine. That's it. Everyone go home. It's not exceptionable anywhere nor offensively bad. It's just fine. This is your standard billionaire dom saves poor (but so pretty) newbie sub. If you've read any amount of kinky romances, you've come across this plot a thousand times. I'm not critiquing that choice. That trope is popular for a reason. But the lengths this book goes to not stand out is impressive. There were a few moments that could have been different and interesting but they never felt fully realized. It is SSC RACK, which I expect from an author who is in the lifestyle and and a dom themselves. There are no consent violations or questionable actions from anyone. The puppy play and little stuff is also pretty cute, and the bi rep is nice. If that sounds like your jam, this is a safe short read. However, just because a book is fine, doesn't mean it can't catch these hands. For starters, this book is boring. And that is saying something coming from me because I'm a character-driven reader. A lot of my favorite books are considered boring. But when a book is this formulaic, this standard, this status quo...why and for what reason? This is an author in the lifestyle. You can't tell me this is the most she's seen or heard. Real life can be great inspiration. Change the names, no one has to know.I don't want to come after this author's writing style but it's really hard to talk about my issues with this book without bringing it up. It reads first draft is the final and best draft. It's flat, there is no flow, and it is super repetitive. Why are we being told that Malcolm is stupid rich twice in the same paragraph. Five times (yes I counted) it is stated that Jamie is from a resort town. I promise you, once is sufficient. From what I can tell, there was no editor here. Had a copy editor gone in and taken out those repetitive moments, this book would have gone down to about 60 pages. That's not good. I'm not going to say what it is because that be mean and I don't want karma to come for me, but it's not good. Now even though this book was super repetitive, there was no consistency with the characters. How is Jamie an open book yet Malcolm can't read him? Malcolm is described as cruel and sadistic yet we only ever see him firm at best. I'm not saying say this can't be sweethearts but you got to give me something. That shower scene, which I did enjoy, hardly makes the cut. I think this book was going for a not too hot, not too cold type of deal but it didn't work. These characters were two-dimensional cardboard cutouts. They were colored in. But it was done with a 12 pack of Crayola markers so choices were limited. Overall, there is nothing wrong with this book. If you're new to kinky books, you might even like it. I've just read too much and with the market as saturated as it is, my standards are pretty high. Unfair, I know but it is what it is. 3.5 stars because I don't feel like my time was completely wasted, but I'm not going to remember much of anything after I post this review. So, I liked the storyline to an extent but the way the story plays out is not very cohesive. I was not a fan of how many times it was mentioned that Malcolm, MC1, is rich. Like, billionaire rich and successful and good looking. I got it after the first time. The following times just make him sound even more conceited. He's so sure of his superiority in money and as a Dom that I found him rather unlikable. Jamie comes off as very sweet and innocent but then there will be comments about his past sexual experiences that are sort of counter to that image. Jamie also suffers from a form of PTSD, as a result of his crappy childhood, but it's never openly discussed by the MC's and that bothers me. It's kind of like the bare bones of a storyline, with the major points highlighted, but none of the supporting information. The ending is completely rushed and left me wondering what happened from point A to The End. I think it could be a decent story if given the time it needs to really bloom but I feel like the author just wanted to get something out there and hurriedly rushed through this. I'm glad it was on KU because I honestly wouldn't have paid for this and I probably won't read any of the other books in the series. It was just all round disappointing.
