This was an entertaining read. My major complaint of the book is that it needed to be tightened up. The weakest part of Ashe's writing is he overplays the psychological dynamics of his two main characters. The issues he explores concerning their relationship are interesting. But, the hand wringing and the missed opportunities to share their "dreaded secrets" wear thin after a while. The book in terms of the mystery element is quite good. I was not sure who the killer was until close to the end.This series is very enjoyable and rather unique. The idea of two police detectives being in love with each other is not new. But, Ashe presents the stories in a way that makes them much more visceral than most other books. The plot of Paternity Case is an ambitious one that he, for the most part, succeeds with. I think that as he continues the series and gets more experience under his belt, Ashe's writing will become tighter. He just needs to concentrate on his strengths - the plots - rather than his weaknesses - relationships. I think, truth be told, Ashe's talent does not lie within the genre of gay mysteries but in the genre of mysteries in general. The mystery aspect of his writing could be much more successful for him rather than the gay romance aspect. I liked Pretty Pretty Boys although some things bothered me about it, notably that the MCs simply didn't act professionally at work a lot and did things that any experienced law officer just wouldn't do. The relationship between the MCs was promising, and I looked forward to the series. The second book bothered me even more with the additional botheration of just how unpleasant the MCs were to each other . With this third book in the series, I reached a breaking point about a third of the way into it for the same accumulated reasons and did a DNF when I realized that I didn't like anybody in the book (except maybe Nico but his character is so underdeveloped it's hard to tell). The book starts out with the MCs getting called to a party hosted by one of the MC's set of prominent parents because a naked, high Santa has crashed it with a gun. The guests have subdued naked Santa when they get there so the MCs handcuff him to a chair in an unused room and go socialize and eat. They don't even ask about the gun much less secure it. Naked Santa mysteriously gets free and crashes in again, with the gun, and kills one guest and seriously injures the MC's (extremely unpleasant) father. The MCs again subdue naked Santa. In the aftermath, everyone is stressed and get more unpleasant and irrational. The series had a promising concept, the writing's okay, the plots have been pretty good; but the execution just makes me want to not read any more.
