I know i’m in the minority here, but I didn’t enjoy this at all. I’ve read and enjoyed many of Charlie Cochet’s other books and series in addition to the THIRDS books, which are one of my all-time favorite series. I was super excited when I saw this and bought it without even reading the sample. My mistake. The first time I tried to read it I dnf’d out even earlier, but thought maybe I should wait a bit and try again in case it was less the book and more my disappointment after finding out she’s pushed back most of the THIRDS/TIN books she had planned so she can write these and some other things instead. So I came back to it when the second book came out, and it’s the book. It’s missing the fun, feelings and characters worth caring about from her other books. Ace is crude and creepy with Colton-who is himself no prize. Their meeting is-I think-supposed to be cute/hot, but to me was just kind of gross and definitely didn’t make me like either of them any better. Then this entire batch of immature jerks takes over Colton’s home and basically take him hostage. When he wants a few minutes to pout alone in his room, creepy Ace climbs his balcony and invites himself in. Then they go to breakfast together where a “tall” dog who is being kept outside in the South Florida heat, comes over and puts her head on Colton’s leg as they sit at a table. The owner informs them she’s an Italian Greyhound. At this point I threw my hands up and was done. Italian Greyhounds are tiny, tiny dogs and it would’ve been so easy to check that and make the dog a regular Greyhound or literally any other dog large enough to stand next to a table and put their head in a person’s lap. Since I already didn’t like any of the characters-except maybe Mason, the guy Ace used to date- the silly thing with the dog was the last straw. I doubt i’ll try any more of this series unless maybe Mason gets a book. I really like Charlie’s THIRDS series. I like how banter was written and how characters interact in that series and I liked the premise of this series so I picked it up.Hm. It’s alright. It doesn’t really live up to the THIRDS level of writing. The suspense isn’t really there and I caught on to the bad guy as soon as he was introduced so I wasn’t really on the edge of my seat there. The characters weren’t as engaging either. Ace was fine. He was an adrenaline junkie goofball and I liked him well enough. Colton was … no. He was a brat. Headstrong and obnoxious in a dangerous way. He spent so much time downplaying something that was a threat and then ignoring his own safety that I just wanted to shake sense into him. His playing with Ace was just amusing though. Still bratty, just like his irritating temper tantrums but amusing because the banter that Charlie is so great at was there. Colton’s friends, though. I really didn’t like them. Or him? There really was just the one: Laz, the model with a manipulative boyfriend. Laz just came off as too much of a caricature for me to want to deal with him. Here we have a direct threat sent to Colton and his father brings in Four Kings Security to watch over him. Now we’ve got Ace constantly watching Colton while Colton doesn’t believe there’s a need for concern. Which was just plain silly. Mutilated animal parts left with threatening notes would make me twitchy as all get out. There’s an instant attraction between the two but Ace doesn’t mix business with pleasure and Colton doesn’t trust anyone easily due to a previous betrayal by loved ones. Somewhere in the background is the threat. We don’t see much of it throughout the book until right before the end.Like I’ve mentioned, Charlie excels at banter and character interactions and that was still here. I vaguely remember some editing errors but nothing that stood out horribly in my mind by the end, just some basics with wrong words and such. Really the biggest issue I had with the writing itself was with the lack of suspense. I kind of expect more from threats than going missing for most of a book and then appearing almost like an afterthought.Overall, the book was entertaining. I still liked it, it just wasn’t up to par with the THIRDS, which is horrible of me to compare a new series but I can’t help it. I rate this a 3.5 out of 5.
